Police are increasing traffic enforcement on certain roadways in the South of Market and along Market Street that have been deemed the most prone to injury accidents.
The dicey stretches include Market Street and Octavia Boulevard; Seventh Street between Harrison and Folsom streets; Harrison and Fourth streets; 10th Street between Mission and Brannan streets; and Mission Street between Fifth and 10th streets.
Officers at the Southern Police Station who are not responding to a call for service are being told to focus traffic enforcement at those five locations.
Southern Station's enforcement area includes the South of Market, Embarcadero, China Basin as well as Market Street between the Ferry Building and 16th Street.
Speeding drivers cause the most injury accidents in those areas, Southern Station police Capt. Michael Redmond said, followed by red-light runners and motorists who aren't mindful of pedestrians.
Redmond gave these reasons for why the five dangerous roads have been called out:
Market Street at Octavia Boulevard: The intersection has the highest number of injury-related crashes. Vehicles traveling eastbound are turning right onto Octavia Boulevard and causing collisions with eastbound bicyclists, resulting in serious injury accidents.
Seventh Street between Harrison and Folsom Streets: Bessie Carmichael Elementary School, which is located here, is back in session. Based upon recent incidents and citizen complaints, the area has high potential for pedestrian-related traffic collisions, especially involving children. Motorists have run red lights and failed to yield to pedestrians while turning onto Folsom Street from northbound Seventh Street.
Harrison and Fourth Streets: Recent traffic incidents and citizen complaints also have police concerned for students at Bessie Carmichael, which is located nearby. Drivers headed westbound have often failed to yield to pedestrians crossing east on Harrison Street and south on Fourth Street.
10th Street between Mission and Brannan Streets: This corridor has Southern Station's second-highest number of red-light runners, resulting in serious injury accidents.
Mission Street between 5th and 10th Streets: Motorists who are not mindful of pedestrians have made this one of the scariest streets in the area.
