Daly fires back at Newsom 'smart' comment

Supervisor Chris Daly wasn’t about to accept the compliment that Mayor Gavin Newsom paid him Thursday morning.

At a press conference, Newsom called Daly, his main nemesis on the Board of Supervisor, “a smart guy” that should know better than to mislead the public when insulting the mayor’s budget policies.

At the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, Daly exhibited self-made charts showing how Newsom’s policies during the last seven years have let the Police Department spend general fund dollars at the expense of other city departments such as the Department of Public Health.

Newsom said Daly wasn’t taking into account the non-general fund sources DPH had received. Daly later called reporters with numbers he said proved that DPH, and the many community-based health services that rely on general fund money, have been shorted.

What was most noteworthy was how Daly reacted to being called “smart” by the mayor.

“I’m not the smartest guy in City Hall, but I’m smarter than Gavin Newsom,” he said.

Daly then called on the mayor to debate the general fund squabble.

“I’d love to drill down and have a debate [with Newsom],” Daly said. “The problem is he can’t do that because he’s not very smart.”

Newsom had said Thursday morning that Daly should not make “apples-to-apples” budget comparisons when they are not warranted.

Daly says he’s ready to battle Newsom on “grapefruit-to-grapefruit” comparisons whenever the mayor is ready and willing.
