A Daly City stepfather with questionable parenting skills will have some time to think about how better to deal with a wide-awake child.

The man who beat up his 5-year-old stepson because he wouldn’t take a nap was sentenced Wednesday to eight months in San Mateo County Jail, starting Dec. 17, and four years of probation.

Michael Demata Miguel, 30, pleaded no contest to felony infliction of injury on a child Aug. 29.

Doctors were alarmed when the boy was brought to Seton Medical Center in Daly City in April of last year, according to county District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. He was vomiting blood and complained of stomach pain.

The boy was found to have pancreatitis and numerous bruises to the right side of his body, Wagstaffe said.

The boy’s mother claimed her son was clumsy and fell often.

But police and officials with Child Protective Services established that Miguel had beaten the boy when he wouldn’t take a nap, Wagstaffe said.

Miguel “struck the victim in the stomach and chest area, causing the victim to fall backward onto a television rack,” the district attorney said.

The defendant has been out of custody on a $50,000 bail bond.
