WHAT: The standardized tests of hundreds of students in at least 12 of Atlanta’s most troubled elementary and middle schools have come under suspicion. A statewide review of test scores revealed rampant staff cheating to escape punishments from failing to meet federal No Child Left Behind standards.
HOW: One elementary school student said his teacher whispered correct answers in his ear. A teacher at another school reported seeing administrators erasing wrong answers and filling in the right ones on completed tests. One teacher said an administrator told her to be quiet about possible cheating.
WHY IT’S OUTRAGEOUS: A number of other urban school districts and individual states have been caught up in cheating scandals in the past several years, including Baltimore and Houston, and Texas, Washington and Florida. Audits flagged 442 schools for irregularities in Texas alone.
