WHO: The ZeuS compromise
WHAT: The ZeuS compromise is a newly uncovered, massive hacking network. Its latest weapon — the Kneber botnet — has lodged itself in more than 2,400 business and government networks around the world, stealing at least 68,000 credentials — many from social-networking sites.
WHY: The criminal hacker gang isn’t even trying to directly steal money with its botnet (dubbed Kneber because of the username linking infected systems worldwide). It built the secret underground network to rent out to ID-theft groups, cyber crooks and rogue governments.
WHAT’S BEING DONE: The cyber attack has been running for a year and continues to expand. Computer security agencies just became aware of its existence and are mounting a counterattack.
