Daily Outrage: Computer security guru taps into cell phone network

WHO: Chris Paget, a computer security researcher

WHAT: Paget built a device for $1,500 that intercepts certain kinds of cell phone calls and records everything that’s said. He offered a demonstration Saturday at DefCon in Las Vegas on how he hacks into GSM, second-generation (2G) cellular technology. Phones on 3G and 4G technology are not vulnerable to attacks.

WHY IT IS BAD: There have been commercial versions of the device that have been mainly used by law enforcement. Paget cobbled his together by purchasing items off the Internet. Authorities have warned him that the device could violate federal wiretapping laws — not to mention make the public more jittery about using technology.
