Phil Williams, vice president of California construction giant WebCor, will discuss green building trends today at the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce’s City Summit conference on climate change.
What is green building? Much of it has to do with the preservation of our natural resources and improving the productivity and health of the building occupants. Energy hasn’t been as big an issue as it needs to be. We weren’t preserving energy.
Is The City ahead of the curve? San Francisco has the nation’s highest standard for private-sector green buildings that will take effect Nov. 3. They were unanimously supported by San Francisco businesses.
How can you improve the health of building occupants? Most people are in buildings for 75 percent of their life, whether it’s at home or work, so part of it has to do with putting more friendly materials into buildings.
How can green building practices best conserve energy? By not just looking at the energy that a building consumes while it’s operating, but also the energy in the materials that go into the building.
How can homebuyers tell if a building is green? Green residential buildings are GreenPoint rated — if that’s not readily available, you need to ask. Right now, the tenants know what they want and the developers are producing for a green market but it’s up to the Realtors to match the two together.
