A 14-inch water main that supplies the San Francisco Fire Department with water for hydrants was hit and broke during construction work being done at Polk and Bush streets.
The block of Polk Street — between Bush and Pine — in the Tenderloin neighborhood is blocked off while repairs are being made. Nearby construction workers reported the main break around noon Thursday.
Tyrone Jue, spokesman for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, said the break has been isolated and water is being diverted around the area, with minimal affect on the fire hydrant flows.
“Drinking water also feeds in to the [fire hydrant],” Jue said. “So there would be little affect on the Fire Department. No consumer is without water.”
Repairs are expected to be completed by 3:30 p.m.
