Today marks the first day of construction work near the Golden Gate Bridge that will once again force bicyclists and pedestrians to share the east sidewalk.
Along with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, the bridge district is working to restore portions of the Battery East Bay Trail, a walking path that connects to the west sidewalk of the famous span.
As a result, that sidewalk — which is normally reserved exclusively for bikers — will be closed until April 1. Cyclists, pedestrians, tourists and other sightseers will share the east sidewalk of the bridge until that date.
The west sidewalk was originally set to be shut down on Jan. 9, but construction on the trail was delayed until today.
