Clinton for Veep: Never mind

Gibbs: There will be no Clinton surprise    (reuters photo)

The White House is strenuously denying Bob Woodward's claim that swapping out Vice President Joe Biden for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is "on the table" in the West Wing.

Apparently, the only thing on the table is that virtuous bowl of apples that everyone ignores.

"Absolutely not true," said White House press secretary Robert Gibbs. "It's not anything that's being discussed."

Woodward, promoting his book, "Obama's Wars," told CNN's John King USA yesterday that swapping Biden for Clinton would help Obama in 2012 with women and minorities, plus set up Clinton for her own run four years later.

Biden is also qualified to head the State Department, with a long history of foreign policy experience in the Senate and lately as vice president.

But no. Gibbs said Obama regards choosing Biden as VP "one of the best decisions he's made." And Obama is "also quite pleased" with Clinton's leadership at State.

"I think she's going to the DNC," Gibbs joked.

He also shot down speculation that Clinton could move over to the Pentagon if Defense Secretary Robert Gates leaves as expected next year.
