Carlmont chasing down PAL Bay championship

The Carlmont High School baseball team has been on a mission to claim sole possession of the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division championship and with only three games remaining, it has first place in its sights.

Entering the week, the Scots (16-6, 7-3 PAL Bay) were riding a seven-game winning streak and tied with El Camino for first in the Bay and each team has to be near perfect to win the league.

Carlmont finishes up with one game against defending PAL Bay and Central Coast Section Division II champion Burlingame (11-11, 5-5), and two versus Sequoia (10-11-1, 4-6), whereas El Camino finishes with Terra Nova (12-9-1, 5-5) twice and one more with Aragon (8-12-2, 3-7).

Burlingame still has Zach Grotz, who has been nearly untouchable, with a 1.47 ERA and .194 batting average against.

The Scots have gotten a much-needed boost from senior catcher Colton Hicks. Hicks has crushed three home runs and driven in 19 runs, to go along with his .356 batting average.

He has also handled a very effective pitching staff.

Daniel Madigan has been stellar for Carlmont with a 1.21 ERA and 51 strikeouts. His six wins lead the team.

He has also been chipping on the offensive side of the ball with a .400 batting average and seven RBIs.

Bradley Levine has been nearly as impressive.

He carried a 1.41 ERA into the week to go along with his 41 strikeouts and perfect 5-0 record.

Hicks has had backup in the lineup from freshman Kyle Barret. The underclassman is hitting .338 with 15 RBIs, which is second on the team behind Hicks.

Carlmont can also clinch a spot in the CCS playoffs with a victory over Burlingame on Friday.

Carlmont finished tied for first place last season with Burlingame, which took that momentum to a CCS Division II title.

Carlmont reached the CCS playoffs last season and fell in the first round to Mitty 9-3.
