Car picnic remains successful

Parks manager Phil Ginsburg wrote that the owners of the old coupes that glamourized Jimmy’s Car Picnic in Golden Gate Park over the weekend were “well managed, respectful of the park...and really cool,’’ after months of debate about whether it was appropriate.

It took almost a year of negotiating with park officials, who said cars simply don’t belong in the park, to keep the event in Speedway Meadow for the picnic’s 22nd year. Event organizers had never had problems getting the permit in the past.

In the end they received a revised permit with a heftier price at $9,000 plus a remediation fee of $6,000 or $8 per car, when last year it was a flat-rate of $6,300 and the year before it was $1,650.

And apparently the grass and Jimmy’s cars can in fact coexist.

“Initial reports confirm my own observations about this year's picnic,’’ Ginsburg wrote.
