Calif stem cell agency will continue funding despite ruling

California's stem cell agency says it will fund human embryonic stem cell research that a federal judge in Washington has temporarily blocked from receiving federal funds.

The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine condemned Monday's decision by U.S. District Court Judge Royce Lamberth to put President Obama's stem cell research policy on hold while it's challenged in court.

The voter-created, $3 billion agency pledged to remain a stable source of stem cell research funding.

President Obama last year expanded the availability of stem cells from human embryos for federally funded research.

Judge Lamberth found that opponents would succeed in arguing that the new guidelines violate a law barring the use of federal dollars to destroy human embryos.
