Two men’s basketball teams struggling with consistency meet today when Oregon State visits Cal, which has lost three of its last five games to fall below .500 in Pac-12 Conference play.

The Beavers were unable to build on their surprising win over Washington last week and lost 71-68 to Washington State on Saturday.

Cal scored 53 second-half points on 60 percent shooting against Colorado on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a dismal first half and the Bears ended up losing 81-71. Oregon State’s defense ranks last in the Pac-12, and the Beavers will need to find an answer for Cal’s Allen Crabbe, who averages a conference-best 20 points per game.

Oregon State (11-9, 1-6 Pac-12) is one of only six teams in the nation with five players averaging double figures in scoring, the Beavers appeared to have turned a corner with their 74-66 win over Washington last week. Instead, they returned to form against Washington State when they were outrebounded by 12.

The Bears (11-8, 3-4) have produced 16 steals in each of their past two games, but they still finished with a split against Utah and Colorado last week. Crabbe scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half against Colorado, but the team needs him to produce earlier in the game. Junior guard Justin Cobbs had 22 points against the Buffaloes after struggling in recent weeks. Senior Brandon Smith has provided a spark after missing six games with a concussion, but forward David Kravish was limited against Colorado with a sprained ankle. Kravish averages a team-high 7.1 rebounds for California, which ranks last in the Pac-12 in 3-point shooting at 31.2 percent.
