Menlo School’s Andrew Buchanan came up short in his bid to reach the state championships, finishing in a tie for 23rd at the NorCal Golf Championships at the Butte Creek Country Club in Chico on Monday.

Armijo’s (Fairfield) Aaron Beverly won a playoff to take the individual crown after shooting a 4-under-par 68, while Foothill (Pleasanton) took the team title.

Buchanan, who won the Central Coast Section title last week, fired a 3-over-par 75. He started off slowly, bogeying his first two holes, but recovered to shoot 2-under on the back nine. Buchanan will try and qualify for the U.S. Open as part of sectional qualifying at Lake Merced and Harding Park on June 4 after he advanced through local qualifying earlier this month.

Lowell, which advanced as a team after winning the S.F. Section title, had Tom Ebergen (83) and Sam Miller (88) break 90.

Balboa’s Ben Olson was The City’s top individual scorer at 81, good for a tie for 65th.
