A male giraffe calf, Brandon Belt, was born Friday, Aug. 27, just before 12 p.m. at Six Flags. The birth is the second successful offspring of 7-year-old mother Makali, a reticulated giraffe, and the sire, 7-year-old Nyumekye, a male that had been on loan to Six Flags from Safari West in Santa Rosa.
The 6-foot, 2-inch calf will eventually grow to upward of 18 feet in height, with a neck that can be at least seven feet in length.
Belt, the baseball player, has embraced his new nickname and spent part of Thursday morning, on a rare off day for the G-men, hanging out with the baby giraffe.
“This morning has been one of the best mornings of my life. To have a newborn giraffe named after me, let alone me standing side-by-side him, it’s amazing,” said Belt.
