Update: Gurpreet Kaur has pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 90 days in County Jail and three years probation.
A Redwood City convenience store clerk itching for cash apparently wasn’t lucky enough to get away with scratching off 12 packs worth of state lottery tickets that she didn’t pay for, according to prosecutors.
A jury trial that is expected to last four days was scheduled to start today in the case of 32-year-old Gurpreet Kaur, who is accused of "winning" $6,240.
On Sept. 15, the owner of Gold Star Market reportedly instructed Kaur to insert four packs of tickets in a dispenser, but the tickets went missing, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
Investigators learned Kaur had cashed all the winning tickets at another Redwood City market on Sept. 21 and 22.
“Video surveillance from [Chavez Supermarket] showed Kaur cashing the tickets,” Wagstaffe said, adding eight more packs of tickets had been stolen at another time.
