The security guard at a BevMo store in the Bayview district opened fire on a shoplifter who allegedly tried to run him over with his car Wednesday night, police said.

The guard narrowly escaped injury during the wild getaway at the discount booze shop at 201 Bayshore Blvd. around 7 p.m. The suspect successfully fled and has not been found.

The suspect, a 30-year-old white man with red hair, entered the store, grabbed a basket, and began filling it with items, San Francisco police spokesman Sgt. Daryl Fong said.

“He walks past the registers and front doors without attempting to pay,” Fong said.

A customer alerted employees. The suspect went to his car and put the stolen booze on the seat. A security guard followed him out and tried to stop the suspect from closing the car door. The suspect slammed the door shut and started the car.

“The guard then takes his baton and strikes the driver’s side window until it breaks,” Fong said.

At that, the suspect steps on the gas and crashes into a fence. He reverses, causing the security guard to leap to safety, Fong said. Then the suspect attempted to run over the security guard, who responded by firing three shots on the car.

The suspect fled in a stolen grey 1996 Jeep Cherokee, which police later recovered in the Mission District, Fong said.

It is not known whether the shoplifter was injured. Hospitals in the area have not reported a patient fitting the suspect’s description, Fong said.

Investigators are searching for video surveillance footage of the heist, the police spokesman said.

The security guard is licensed to carry a firearm and is not being reprimanded for response.

“Clearly it appears that he was the victim in this incident,” Fong said.

A manager at the BevMo declined to comment on the incident. He said the security guard was not working Thursday.

“Everyone’s fine,” he said.

The suspect is described as standing 5-feet 10-inches tall, weighing 180 pounds, and wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt with blue jeans and black shoes, police said.
