Bay Area relief corps not going to Haiti

Plans to send local firefighters and support staff to Haiti to help with rescue efforts and salvage the dead in the wake of a strong 7.0-magnitude earthquake were abandoned.

Harold Schapelhouman, the chief of the Menlo Park Fire District, which sponsors a team of San Francisco and Peninsula fire agencies named Task Force 3, said the 70-person mission to Haiti was canceled along with other U.S. endeavors.

“The rescue window is obviously closing,” Schapelhouman said Monday. “It’s time for us to get out of the way.”
