Bartending whiz talks about SF farmers' market event 

Reza Esmaili, the restaurateur and president of the San Francisco chapter of the National Bartenders Guild, is promoting the Spring Farmers Market Cocktail Night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ferry Building. Proceeds go to the guild and the Center for Urban Education of Sustainable Agriculture.

What’s a bartenders guild? We are essentially focused on the craft of bartending, concentrating on the spirits and the methods by which they’re assembled into cocktails ... and how they are received by consumers. There are over 200 members in the Northern California network.

Where do you bartend now? I’m solely at Smuggler’s Cove, also known as the world’s best rum bar.

Recently, the ABC started cracking down on infused spirits. How has that affected your cocktails? I’ve heard some rumblings about it. We always follow the law. Infusing has home use, but in a professional context, I’d prefer not to comment.

What can we expect from Wednesday’s event? We take volunteers through the farmers market to see what’s fresh and seasonal. They have the spirits right there to work with. Consumers then have eight different representations of sustainable cocktails. We try to work with locally minded spirits of high integrity.
