BART police oversight unit meets today

The newly formed BART Police Department Review Committee will have plenty to talk about at its meeting today.

Saturday’s highly publicized arrest of Michael Gibson, who was caught on video harrassing and berating fellow passengers before being escorted off a train at West Oakland station by a BART police officer, is sure to be high on the agenda. A video of the incident shows the officer – yet to be identified by BART because he is not facing any charges – removing the 37-year-old San Leandro man from a train and shoving him toward a wall. A window shattered when Gibson made contact.

The officer’s use of force has been questioned. Witnesses said Gibson appeared drunk; Gibson's sister says her brother suffers from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

This committee was formed in January, less than two weeks after then-Officer Johannes Mehserle fatally shot Oscar Grant III early New Year’s Day.
