Waiting on the boarding platform for trains to arrive could soon become a more visual experience for BART passengers.
The agency is considering a proposal that would place 75 televisions in BART stations, with the screens beaming updates of arriving and departing trains, weather forecasts, and connecting information to local bus lines. The new televisions won’t entirely be an altruistic endeavor by BART — they’ll also be displaying advertising slogans.
Along with the 75 televisions, BART could install new digital platform screens, which would mostly display more ads, but they could also provide sports and weather updates. The platform screens would be positioned on the wall on the other side of the BART tracks from passengers. Neither display would contain audio components.
The new project is slated to be headed up by the advertising company Titan, and installation of the equipment would come at no cost to BART. Eventually, BART could receive up to $3.6 million in annual payments from Titan as part of the arrangement.
BART’s board of directors will vote Thursday on whether to approve the proposal.
