The A’s did not extend one-year, $14.1 million qualifying offers to right-hander Bartolo Colon and closer Grant Balfour on Monday, meaning the A’s will not receive any kind of compensation if either players signs elsewhere as a free agent.

The A’s have had interest in bringing back Colon, but Balfour’s price tag could be high and general manager Billy Beane has rarely spent big money on the bullpen.

Giants spring schedule: The Giants announced their 2014 spring training home schedule, with 15 games slated for Scottsdale Stadium in Arizona and an additional two at AT&T Park against the A’s. The first home spring game will be Feb. 26 against the A’s.

La Russa on HOF ballot: Former A’s manager Tony La Russa will join fellow retired managers Joe Torre and Bobby Cox on the Hall of Fame expansion era committee ballot next month. George Steinbrenner, Marvin Miller, Dave Concepcion, Steve Garvey, Tommy John, Billy Martin and Ted Simmons are held over from the 2010 ballot, while Dave Parker and Dan Quisenberry have been added. Vida Blue, Ron Guidry, Al Oliver and Rusty Staub have been dropped.

Sox make qualifying offers: The World Series champion Boston Red Sox made $14.1 million qualifying offers to free agents Jacoby Ellsbury, Mike Napoli and Stephen Drew. Thirteen free agents received the offers. The Yankees also extended offers to a trio of players: second baseman Robinson Cano, outfielder Curtis Granderson and pitcher Hiroki Kuroda. Others receiving the offers were Atlanta catcher Brian McCann, Cincinnati outfielder Shin-Soo Choo, Cleveland pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez, Kansas City pitcher Ervin Santana, St. Louis outfielder Carlos Beltran, Seattle designated hitter Kendrys Morales and Texas outfielder Nelson Cruz.
