PHOENIX — The A’s placed infielder Adam Rosales on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained muscle on the left side of his ribcage.

He will miss the early portion of the season for the defending AL West champions, who open the year Monday at home against Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners.

Rosales got hurt in Monday’s victory against the Milwaukee Brewers at Phoenix Muni Stadium.
He was batting .324 with three home runs and nine RBIs in 21 spring games and also had eight walks for a .468 on-base percentage.

Rosales hit .222 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 42 games for Oakland in 2012. This is his third career stint on the DL.

Cespedes goes deep in A’s win: Yoenis Cespedes homered, Daric Barton had a tiebreaking RBI single in the 10th inning and the A’s held off the Cleveland Indians 7-6 in Cactus League action.
Eric Sogard doubled home Michael Choice with the tying run in the fifth inning and then scored two outs later on Cespedes’ fourth home run of the spring to put the A’s up 5-3.

Nakajima strains hamstring: Shortstop Hiro Nakajima had to leave Tuesday’s game after pulling up injured in the 10th inning. Nakajima was diagnosed with a strained hamstring and is considered day to day. Nakajima had snapped an 0-for-20 slump earlier in the inning. “Hopefully it’s nothing significant and he’ll be back playing in a few days, but you don’t know with hamstrings,” manager Bob Melvin told MLB.com.

Balfour continues recovery: A’s closer Grant Balfour, recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Feb. 14, retired all three batters he faced Tuesday.
