Justin Kaufman, art director of Massive Black, recently completed his graphic novel “Transient Man,” which is based on The City’s homeless. For more information, visit www.transientman.com or www.massiveblack.com.

What inspired you to write “Transient Man”? I’ve lived in The City for like 15 years, in and around the downtown area for most of that. And you know, you see these homeless people sometimes talking to themselves. I work in the GFX industry and I got obsessed with this idea. I talked about it to a few of my co-workers and it kind of spawned into [this]. I hope that it will encourage people to look at homeless people in a positive light.

When did you start and when will it be ready for publication? I did the first 10 pages about five or six years ago and sat on them. In 2008, I pulled them out again and started working on it ... and couldn’t stop. I just completed it a couple of months ago. We should be doing an independent first run that should be available by November.

What’s it all about? It’s a black comedy — a hero’s journey about a homeless guy. You’re not sure if he’s a crazy homeless guy or the savior of humanity. He goes on his whole mission to try to save the universe. Throughout the story, you’re not sure if it’s really happening or all in his head.
