Three al Qaeda terrorists were killed in Marib,Yemen Thursday and two others were captured as they attempted to escalate protests against the Yemeni government, officials said.
A spokesman for the Yemeni Ministry of Interior said soldiers were attacked by members of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). The soldiers were in two vehicles at a security check-point in the province of Marib on Thursday when the attack took place.
Other soldiers seized one of the vehicles, killing three of the terrorists. A second vehicle "managed to escape, carrying a number of injured AQAP operatives," a press release from the Yemeni government stated.
Three Yemeni soldiers were also killed in the firefight and another three were wounded during the incident.
Yemeni security forces detained two al Qaeda members, Khalid Saeed Batarfi and Ahmed Omar Abduljalil al-Khadebi both of whom were heading towards demonstration square in the area of Taiz.
Batarfi is one of the senior al Qaeda leaders in Abyan and oversees the terrorist networks local media operations. He is also responsible for carrying out several terrorist attacks in the country.
