The Giants placed left-handed pitcher Jeremy Affeldt on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a knee injury and purchased the contract of Travis Blackley from Triple-A Fresno to fill Affeldt’s spot in the bullpen.
Affeldt strained his right MCL while lifting his 4-year-old son Saturday night. He said he felt an initial pop in the knee, and the pain worsened overnight.
He said Tuesday that the amount of pain he had was already “quite a bit less than I [had] a couple days ago.”
“I’ve already switched knee braces,” he said. “I’m actually in one that I’ll probably be playing in. To already be in that one for me is a positive.”
Blackley, a 29-year-old Australian, has appeared in eight major league games for the Seattle Mariners and the Giants.
He appeared in two games for San Francisco in 2007.
This is Affeldt’s second freak injury in as many years. He cut his right hand in September last year while trying to pry apart frozen hamburger patties.
