Jason Walthall, the interim co-president of the San Francisco SPCA, says the organization has again teamed with Macy’s to display adoptable dogs and cats in the store’s windows. The animals will be on display till Jan. 2.
How are the animals selected for the Macy’s display? We look for animals that will like the idea of being around a lot of people. Some animals are shy, but some animals absolutely love it.
The SPCA has been using this promotion for 24 years. Is there something about the holiday season that spurs adoptions? During this time of year, people really start thinking about their family and thinking about their home, and how wonderful it would be to add something to what they already have.
How important is the holiday pet display for the SPCA’s overall adoption program? About 10 percent of our total adoptions come from the displays, so there is no question it’s a huge boost to our overall mission.
The display started Nov. 19. How have the crowds been so far? We’ve seen a lot of interest, and the crowds have been really great. Our goal is to get 320 animals adopted from this program, so we still have a long way to go.
