For some the future might be bright, but for Gary James Rivera, Marco De La Vega and Brian Furstman, the future is perfect.
“Future Perfect,” a weekly Thursday, 21-and-older party at newly minted nightclub Monarch, is the brainchild of three men who believe in setting trends and bucking niche genres.
“It’s about showing people what’s happening as opposed to giving people what they already know they like,” De La Vega says. “A concept of being, specifically, not genre-oriented.”
“We also wanted to create a new scene that brings together trendsetters in fashion and music and so on,” Rivera says.
An experiment in real-life social connectivity, “Future Perfect” also capitalizes on the trio’s contacts and relationships.
“If you have your social network set up properly, you’re getting things before publicists because you’ve created these personal connections,” Rivera says, “and that’s what we wanted to do with the party: Use all of our personal connections to really bring together this idea of what’s going on in music right now — in club music and culture.”
Beaming in to Monarch on Thursday is Brooklyn’s dark-wave duo Light Asylum. Critically acclaimed and publicly adored, singer Shannon Funchess is known to transfix with booming vocals, deep-voiced and romantic. Keyboardist Bruno Coviello provides an aural backdrop of synth-pop fitted with post-punk rock teeth.
DJ sets from White Horse — Ben Chisholm of Chelsea Wolfe — Loric of Water Borders and De La Vega provide dance floor fodder before and after Light Asylum’s performance.
Vowing to operate solely on the cutting edge, the gentlemen are finding success in approaching things differently.
“The one thing that I really love about this party is that everybody who shows up stays — all night,” De La Vega says.
“We’re just trying to have a fun place for people to dance,” Furstman says.
