Re: “Iconic University High School coach Jim Tracy dies after battle with ALS

My first cross country race was against Riordan in the fall of 1965 at Golden Gate Park. I was a freshman at Ygnacio Valley High in Concord, CA. Tracy won the varsity race; of course, he was a year older (I think?), but only a sophomore. And over the next several years I raced against him occasionally (and was always creamed!). Jim was as nice a guy as I've met. It is not surprising at all that he coached so many champions, for he was the exemplar. I ran a race last Saturday and there was a moment of silence for someone who had died recently...I kinda missed what was said, but I had a suspicion it was for Jim, as I knew he was ill. Sad day. A bright day, too.
