I am disgusted to see one more article attempting to make former City College interim chancellor Pamila Fisher into a heroine. She was the first member of the wrecking crew at CCSF. She sought to impose a secretive and authoritarian structure on the school. For example, with only three days notice, providing no time for discussions, she acted to dismantle the department chair structure that has been vital to serving students. She sought to place the chairs’ responsibilities in the hands of remote deans. And the trustees gave into this and most of her other plans. Please stop with the nonsense about Fisher facing resistance.
And to quote Fisher complaining about trustees delaying the appointment of a special trustee by asking questions about the special trustee’s pay, selection process, etc., speaks volumes about Fisher’s authoritarianism and lack of respect for trustees doing their job by asking questions.
While being paid at a rate of $276,000/year with additional benefits while also drawing a fat pension, she went after the vulnerable part-time faculty members demanding that their pay be severely reduced and that their medical benefits, for those lucky enough to receive them, be eliminated. Some heroine!
Fisher failed as a leader. She refused to challenge the outrageous decision threatening City College with closure by the secretive and authoritarian accrediting commission, the ACCJC . This ACCJC is now subject to a legal action by the city’s attorney who claims it acted illegally and with a political bias against City College. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Education has found the accrediting agency to have violated its rules, and the state government will soon audit it prompted by what are perceived as the ACCJC’s misdeeds and abuses of power.
The state chancellor is also a big problem. His not helping Fisher and City College comes as no surprise. His office was pissed off at City College for resisting their plans for restructuring community colleges into diploma mills serving local businesses, and probably welcomed the attacks on City College from the ACCJC.
Fisher is no heroine. She created a bigger mess at CCSF. She should be ordered by the state government to stay away from any community college.
