Please, don't comment on what you think it's like to be an ER nurse, because you really have no idea unless you do the job every single day. You have no idea what it is like to see a drunk person who is screaming at you, degrading you, taking up one of your beds in the ER while you have a sick person that has to wait in the waiting room because this scum of the earth has taken their bed. Don't act like you know what it is like you walk into work and feel unsafe because you never know what's about to walk through the doors. Lets not comment on things you can't even pretend to comprehend until you've lived it for as long as I have being a nurse at one of the busiest inner-city ERs in the country. We don't really have many options when it comes to this population of people, there are no beds at the local detox, there are no beds at the local shelter, and we cannot release them into the streets as drunk/high as they are so we are forced to board them and we are at the mercy of wondering when their next violent outburst will be. So next time you want to comment on the "arrogant attitude" of ER nurses, think twice...We are doing the best we can in a very flawed system.
