@Mdwst1: First, the root of religion is relationship, respect forwhat is sacred, i.e. relationship with God. It is a means to an end, a sourceto be in relation and to worship the Creator. The Catholic Church is a churchof sinners in need of reconciliation and the reconciliation comes from God whoacts through the Church and guides the Church through His Loving paternity as aFather. Bishop Cordileone made a mistake, but his mistake does not negate himbeing a man striving to profess the goodness of God. On the contrary, it showsthe mercy of reconciliation. The Church condemns the abuse of minors and isdoing all it can to prevent such abuse from occurring again. The bishop is notbeing condemned because of his mistake, but because he proclaims the Truth ofJesus Christ and the people demanding tolerance and acceptance donât tolerateor accept any ideology that opposes their ways of thinking, and this is adouble standard. One cannot be a person of tolerance and be intolerant.
@Leslie Gray: Gina101 said it beautifully, but I will add to what shesaid. Think of it this way, if you went to a hospital because you were sick, could a sick doctor make you better? Yes, his being sick does not change thefact that he can administer treatment to help you. The same is true for theChurch. The Church is a hospital for sinners, and all the people in the Churchare sinners including clergy, but the teachings are from God and are the way tosalvation and are free from sin. It is Jesus who works through the priest tobring salvation, not the priest, but the power of Christ. Although there havebeen failures within the Church, it is the duty of the clergy to proclaim theWord of God to all people and we should all strive to attain the eternal rewardof heaven.
