Re: “S.F. lawmaker’s ‘homeless bill of rights’ passes state Assembly committee

In Los Angeles MacArthur park has turned into homeless encampment. By feeding and clothing homeless and hungry people, volunteer groups are "enabling" people to stay homeless and hungry. And worse yet enabling them to stay illegally camped in the park.

Those of us who are residents in this area are having to deal with the very ugly reality side of the homeless. The constant Filth, trash, urine, feces, loud noise, rapid alcohol and drug use. Using the public sinks and drinking fountains to bathe, shave or wash their clothing. They destroy trees, Flowers, Brush and grass. Many of the homeless are mentally ill and frighten off our children from using the park to play or participate in sport activities.

MacArthur park was provided by the city of Los Angeles for human enjoyment. Recreational use, Entertainment venues, Sports and Play ground areas for children. Volunteer groups who come to MacArthur Park feeling they need to "Do Good" have only turned this park into a make shift "Soup Kitchen"

The homeless now knowing that they can be fed and given clothing here on a regular basis have taken up permanent residency.
After being fed the homeless leave the park riddled with trash and litter. The volunteer and charity groups pack up & go leaving the mess behind, never having to see it or deal with it.

star athletes get special treatment, nobody in the outer world gets this type of specialty attention. since when does a public drunk get a second chance at it? nope.

Re: “All the bickering has caused America's Cup to lose steam

This is a rediculiously bias article. Yes there has been some schinanigans but this americas cup is the first in a massive change in such a historic cup. When these changes are made it's sure to bring drama, but this is history in the making. It's an honor to have such a historic event held off our shores and I hope oracle can keep it here.

Re: “All the bickering has caused America's Cup to lose steam

Americans don't like empty threats, cry babies or diving, which is a Texas-sized reason why soccer is still a niche sport in the States.."

- Fair enough, then get a sailing team like New Zealand's rather than the one you've got.

Re: “All the bickering has caused America's Cup to lose steam

The author of the article seems to have a short memory... He makes a bold statement that "Here's the problem: In this country, we like our competitions to be decided on the field, not in the courtroom."

He seems to forget that in July 2007, Oracle Team (then called BMW Oracle) filed a lawsuit in the New York supreme court because in their view the rules set by then America's Cup holder, Alinghi, were unfair. They won in the courtrooms which then gave them the right to face Alinghi on the water. They, deservedly, won on the water in February 2010.

Re: “All the bickering has caused America's Cup to lose steam

Not sure where this author's judgment or perspective lies - though less doubt about unthinking patriotism. Oracle, let's recall, set the rules for this match, including the class construction rules, and then saw no compunction - following the Artemis tragedy - in lobbying for still more rules to advantage themselves after the challengers' vessels were largely set and (ii) seemed a threat. And then - and we still don't know why - it turns out that they illegally modified their boats.

For the novices here, this is a bit like Lance Armstrong, but with the added factors of several times the budget of everyone else, plus setting the race format and then changing that late in the game. We can only hope they do lose - not only because ETNZ haven't tried any of this cr*p but also because, frankly, who will ever again choose to race such a bunch of egocentric schmucks? Perhaps that's the plan - "holder of the America's Cup for life"?
