Super fun! Top Guys flies as a hilarious exposé of the story behind the story behind the guys. I haven't seen the movie in years, but all the over-the-top scenes came roaring back to life during the play, with a few twists to tell the story as Tony Scott originally intended.
As another reviewer noted, they did a good job paying tribute to the original script and there are lots of moments you'll recognize (there were multiple groups of audience members singing along). There were some great monologues - well written and delivered. You can tell these guys love what they do and are having as much fun as the audience, which really adds to the energy.
While I thankfully didn't see any twigs n' berries blowing in the breeze, the shower scene was hilarious, and Mr. Serinus perhaps missed the make-out scene at the end of the first half. I won't spoil it, but the audience was rolling with laughter. Overall I think they did a great job of keeping it both funny and sexy, with lots of credit to the dancers and "Charlie".
Finally, what would a Top Gun spoof be without dog fighting. It's an intimate theater, but they made the most of it with the genius airplane props and fight scenes. It's worth watching for that alone.
I went with some friends on a Friday night and it was packed, so get there early and enjoy a few drinks at the bar!

Loved the show! It was really fun. I was fortunate enough to catch it while visiting SF. I'd see it again if I could! Our whole group had a great time. The producers did a commendable job of adding racy and hilarious twists while staying true to the Top Gun storyline. The dance scenes were awesome and definitely reminded me of Fly Girl scenes from In Living Colour. The actors delivered just what the show needed - lots of energy and laughs. I was bummed to see the negativity in this review (surprised really) but I'm happy to at least have an outlet to share how much I loved the show!
Thank you for your honest review!
I don't know what show Jason Serinus is reviewing in this article but the play that I watched was not the one he described. Last night's show of Top Guys was very entertaining, and based in the audience's responses to the scenes, they (and I) seem to have understood the message of the entire work. Great job by all involved. Loved it loved it loved it. I will be seeing it again!!!
What?! I LOVED this show! It was sooo great! Along with the rest of the audience last night, I sang my heart out for all the singalongs! And lack of SEXINESS? DID YOU EVEN SEE THE DANCERS? They really set the mood. And the fog machine was just...muah. Great touch.
And the shower room scene made me all hot and sweaty. I could not stop thinking about what was under those towels.
The only thing I even slightly agree with in this article is Charlie's (Monica Hernandez) fabulous figure.
I saw Top Guys last night and like the rest of the audience, laughed my ass off. Per the other comments, if Jason Victor Serinus only saw the preview show, he most likely missed some key elements of the performance last night. It was a high-energy show with great props, music, audience sing-alongs, and the performances were great from the actors (and no, it didn’t feel like a high school play). This was a humorous “what if’ kind of take on the movie, and my guess is that the writers weren’t aiming for a Tony award, but wanted to put on a fun show for an audience, which they did. We all had a great time, and it was totally worth my 20 bucks.
The performance Victor witnessed was a preview show (a week and a half before opening) to get a sense of what the final show would be. The stage had a built-in set that impeded our ability to use the film footage we created for Maverick and Charlie's sex scene, dance and flight choreography, and staging. We have worked extensively in the space since then and ironed out all the kinks, including costuming and choreography. Needless to say, audiences won't see underwear poking out from underneath towels or an unfinished performance.
I also saw the show last night, and Gaea Pet is right - there was TONS of sexiness! I loved the planes, cool lighting on the sides, and the Nerf gunfight towards the end was great! This play didn't only rely on sound effects to get the scenes across, the actors actually interacted with the props! The actor playing Maverick did such a good job of being innocent, and yet hopelessly in the closet - hilarious!! I laughed the whole time!
I just saw this play last night and loved it. What play were you watching? The actors definitely weren't wearing visible underwear during the shower scene, and there was a steamy sex scene between the lead girl & guy (that involved a stick of lipstick... I'll say no more). Maybe you saw it before they sexed it up...?
