A 66-year-old woman was punched in the face by a reportedly vicious transient who tried to make off with her necklace in the Mission district on Tuesday afternoon.

But the 4:21 p.m. robbery in the 3000 block of 25th Street was thwarted when witnesses flagged down police. Ricardo Hinojosa Gonzalez, 49, was booked on charges that include robbery and possession of marijuana for sale, along with an outstanding warrant, Sgt. Dennis Toomer said Wednesday.

“He was detained close to where the attack happened,” Toomer said.

Gonzalez allegedly snuck up from behind the woman and began grabbing at her necklace, but the 66-year-old wouldn’t have it. She was punched after a struggle, Toomer said, but thankfully her injury was minor.
