One man was killed Sunday morning and another was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol after a crash on U.S. Highway 101 near Cesar Chavez Street that snarled traffic for hours, police said.
According to CHP Public Affairs Officer Shawn Chase, 59-year-old Arie Mudd, of San Pablo, had pulled over to the shoulder of the highway about 2:10 a.m. — just north of the Cesar Chavez exit — to change a tire when a Toyota Scion driven by
20-year-old Ka Wan Kwang, of Daly City, drifted out of the lane and struck him.
Mudd was pinned under the Toyota and later pronounced dead at the scene, Chase said.
Members of Mudd’s family who live in San Francisco declined to comment on the accident or his death.
Kwan was transported to San Francisco General Hospital and was treated for minor injuries, but officers arrested him soon after on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, Chase said.
The accident blocked two lanes of traffic until all lanes were reopened about 3:30 a.m., Chase said.
