San Francisco State coach earns milestone win vs. ranked opponent

DON NASSER FAMILY PLAZA — The San Francisco State University men’s basketball team is riding a season of highs. And on Saturday, the Gators delivered head coach Paul Trevor his 100th win with the program by beating No. 20 Chico State, 65-51.

“It means the world to me,” Trevor said after the game. “… I’m excited, but I’m excited about tonight. These guys, they made me so proud. Makes me want to hug my wife and kiss my daughter.”

Warren Jackson and Israel Hakim each scored a team-high 13 points for the Gators. Chiefy Ugbaja scored 11 and grabbed 12 rebounds.

SFSU moves into a tie for second place in the CCAA with the victory.

“To beat Chico at home, that’s a signature win,” Trevor said. “… It’s the win that says, ‘We’re on the map for real.’ ”

Assuming SFSU (17-3, 11-3) can finish the season without melting down, the Gators can expect an at-large bid into the NCAA Division II Tournament even if they don’t win the conference tournament.

They return to action on the road against Cal State Monterey on Friday.

USF 74, LMU 64

Ronnie Boyce III, coming off the bench, led the University of San Francisco men’s basketball team in scoring for the third-straight contest as the Dons won their third consecutive game against West Coast Conference competition.

Boyce scored 16 points as USF spread the scoring among nine of the 10 players to see the floor.

The Dons improve to 17-8 overall and 7-5 in conference. They play two home games next week against Santa Clara and Brigham Young before finishing their season with four-straight road games, including a matchup with the No. 1 Gonzaga Bulldogs in Spokane on Feb. 16.
