Tobias Whitley’s debut as Mission head football coach will have to wait a week. With just 15 players available — three short of the required minimum — the Bears have been forced to forfeit their opening game, which was scheduled for Friday at Menlo.

With school having just started on Monday, the Bears finally have their full roster, but needed players to be cleared through mandatory physical exams. Three players had gone to a doctor whose accreditation had expired, and with those three players out, Mission is under the minimum.

“I’ve been here for seven years and we’ve never had to forfeit because of low numbers,” said Whitley, who had served as the JV coach prior to this season.

Whitley expects his team to have 25 players in time for the August 31 home opener, set to be played at Kezar Stadium against Oakland Tech.

As for Menlo, the Knights are now 1-0 under a new head coach of their own, Josh Bowie, without even taking the field. Bowie’s on-field debut will come on September 1 at home against Piedmont.
