San Francisco Giants infielder Pablo Sandoval leaves game with injury

AT&T Park — San Francisco Giants first baseman Pablo Sandoval left Sunday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers with an apparent right hamstring injury. He was seen holding his hamstring in the dugout after hitting a triple and then scoring on a sacrifice fly.

Austin Slater entered the game in the top of the sixth inning to replace Sandoval. The Giants’ regular starting first baseman, Brandon Belt, is currently out with a knee injury.

Sandoval had been the team’s go-to third baseman while Evan Longoria was out with a broken hand, but he moved over to first this past week after Belt went down.

Slater, meanwhile, has played sparingly since his June call-up, getting just eight starts in about two months of action. He’s hitting .294 with three stolen bases this year. At 25, Slater is one of the team’s youngest players, and the Giants have been hoping he could flash his potential down the stretch. This, however, is not the reason they wanted to insert him into the lineup.

Going into the game, Sandoval, who turns 32 in August, was hitting .247 in 91 games, with 10 doubles, nine home runs, 38 RBIs and 21 runs scored, with a .309 on-base percentage, a .410 slugging percentage and a .719 OPS. He has his highest batting average and slugging percentage since 2014, and more extra-base hits (19) than he’s had since 2015.
