Richard Hubbard, The San Francisco Examiner’s controller, who managed financial policies and development for the paper for a half-decade, died Monday. He was 63.

“Rick was one of the most dedicated and hard-working managers I’ve had the pleasure of working with. He was a friend and a partner to the entire management team, and he will be missed on many levels,” Examiner Publisher John Wilcox said.

Hubbard, who lived in Alameda, passed away after a six-month battle with lung cancer.

For the past 30 years, he served as a financial manager in a dozen large and small companies in San Francisco. The Arizona State University alumnus, who was a wine connoisseur, toured the countryside in his Porsche. Hubbard enjoyed fly fishing and possessed a dry sense of humor that will be missed by his friends and colleagues at The Examiner.
