San Francisco 49ers sign linebacker James Onwualu to practice squad

The San Francisco 49ers have added linebacker James Onwualu to their practice squad, the team announced on Monday, its first day back from the bye week.

Given the fact that Reuben Foster has missed two straight games with a hamstring injury, and has dealt with a shoulder issue much of the season, San Francisco needed at least some depth at the position, just in case. Foster is the only player currently listed on the 49ers depth chart at the WILL position.

Onwualu, a 6-foot-1, 235-pounder out of St. Paul, Minnesota, primarily played the SAM at Notre Dame, where he was a teammate of San Francisco’s rookie right tackle Mike McGlinchey.

In four years with the Irish (2013-16), Onwualu played in 48 games, registering 143 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss and six sacks. He had 75 tackles as a senior, along with a team-high 11.5 tackles for loss and three sacks.

Onwualu signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted rookie free agent on May 1, 2017, appearing in nine games and tallying nine special teams tackles last season. He was waived by the Chargers on Aug. 26.
