Rookie big man rejoins Warriors — won’t see floor anytime soon

OAKLAND — During his pregame press conference on Monday night, Steve Kerr admitted that he’s yet to watch the tape of Damian Jones’ recent two-game stint with the Santa Cruz Warriors of the D-League.

It was an honest comment from the Golden State Warriors head coach, which underscored the fact that the 21-year-old rookie is still a ways off from making his NBA debut — even though the team recalled him to the roster earlier in the day.

“We want him to play quite a bit with Santa Cruz before we really give him a chance here,” Kerr said of Jones, who is inactive against the Atlanta Hawks.

“He needs to build his conditioning and his timing and everything else,” Kerr added. “But we want to bring him back periodically during that time, so he’s still a part of everything and still kind of going through some practices with us too.”

The logistics of the Santa Cruz schedule suggest that Jones could be hanging with the Dubs throughout the duration of the current five-game homestand. Santa Cruz is on a four-game East Coast road swing, returning to the Kaiser Permanente Arena on Dec. 9.

Kerr also offered an indirect vote of confidence for fellow rookie Patrick McCaw, who has quickly entrenched himself in the rotation. When asked if any other players could be sent to Santa Cruz for extra work, Kerr indicated it was unlikely.

“I don’t see it,” Kerr said. “But you never know.”
