About 100 cyclists from California are set to take off from South San Francisco on Sunday as part of the Ride 2 Recovery Golden State Challenge, a weeklong biking expedition to Southern California.

The ride, which will include more than 200 cyclists in all, covers 450 miles and will benefit rehabilitation and recovery efforts of injured military veterans. More than 2,000 vets have taken part in those rehab programs.

Cyclists in the Golden State Challenge use hand cycles, recumbents and traditional road bikes. They will start at the Holiday Inn near San Francisco International Airport and will stop in Santa Cruz, Carmel, San Simeon, Pismo Beach, Solvang and Ventura.

The ride ends Oct. 9 at Santa Monica Pier, followed by a concert hosted by the United Service Organizations.

Veterans participating in the ride include a Purple Heart recipient, 12 teams from state Veterans Affairs facilities and others who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
