Ribbon-cutting date set for Raygun Gothic Rocketship

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled to welcome a 40-foot rocket ship sculpture to the Embarcadero.

“Raygun Gothic Rocketship” – a 40-foot fantastical recreation of vessels that in the 1940s were imagined would one day help Americans colonize space – will be installed at the end of Mission Street, where bronze spider sculpture “Crouching Spider” previously stood.

A 60-person crew from arts group Five Ton Crane began weatherproofing and modifying the sculpture last week, according to Orlando.

The sculpture, which has been displayed at Burning Man, Maker Faire and other festivals and events, is the group’s second major piece of work.

The Bay Area group’s first sculpture, “Steampunk Tree House,” was recently installed at Dogfish Head Brewery in Delaware.

“We’ll have a large-scale sculpture on either coast, which is kind of cool,” Orlando said.
