Raiders make it official with Jon Gruden’s coordinators

The Raiders’ $100-million man has officially come to terms with his coordinators.

Greg Olson will return to the franchise to be the offensive coordinator. Paul Guenther will lead the defense. Rich Bisaccia is in charge of special teams.

To answer the question on most Oakland fans’ minds: Gruden will be calling the plays on offense.

Olson was the OC during Derek Carr’s rookie season, when the Raiders went 3-13. He got his start with the team the year before when it went 4-12. Since then, he served in the same role for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2015-16) before overseeing Jared Goff’s resurgence as the quarterbacks coach of the Los Angeles Rams.

For Carr, he’ll be a semi-familiar face as the team is going to a different OC than the previous season for the third-straight year.

Guenther has spent 13 of his 16 seasons in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals, which has traditionally had a tough defense that limits its opponents in both yards per play (the sixth-best in 2017) and points per game (over his tenure as DC, they allowed 20.1 points per game, fifth-best).

He was the linebackers coach for seven seasons before being named DC. During that span, he oversaw Vontaze Burfict’s rise to one of the best at his position in the league. Burfict is known for playing fast and on the edge of the rules — which could make him a culture fit for the Raiders. (He’s due a $2-million roster bonus from the Bengals on March 31, so there’s a chance he’s released by the team that drafted him.)

Bisaccia spent the last five years with the Dallas Cowboys.
