San Francisco Community Radio — once known as KUSF — is coming back to the air!

Damian Esper of the nonprofit’s board of directors announced Monday that the Federal Communications Commission approved the new station, which will begin broadcasting under the call letters KXSF (at 102.5 FM) next year.

Esper said the station is the culmination of a seven-year effort (since the shutdown of KUSF 90.3 FM) by former KUSF volunteers and community members dedicated to bringing hyper-local, grassroots radio back to The City.

SFCR will share the 102.5 FM frequency with San Francisco Public Press, a local nonprofit newspaper. Each organization will broadcast its own original programming during specific hours set out by agreement with the FCC.

On Nov. 11, station staff and supporters are holding a fundraiser at Thee Parkside, with a lineup including Acid King, Noothgrush, Cardinal Wyrm, Hazzard’s Cure and DJs Carolyn and The Creep. The goal is to raise $80,000 by the end of the year.
