Considering that nearly two-thirds of San Francisco residents are renters, it is not surprising that voters passed a bill requiring prospective property buyers be notified of the details of any evictions that took place to vacate the building.
Proposition B requires the seller of a building with two or more units to disclose to all potential buyers the legal grounds for any previous evictions, and to reveal whether or not the evicted tenants were elderly or disabled.
The measure was backed by Supervisor Chris Daly — who came into office as a housing rights activist – and placed on the ballot by five members of the Board of Supervisors after a similar bill was vetoed by Mayor Gavin Newsom.
“In the case of landlord tenant issues, unfortunately, the mayor is out of step,” said Daly.
City law already requires sellers to inform buyers about the legal details of evictions prior to entering into a contract, but Proposition B mandates that building owners make the disclosure to any would-be buyer.
