A $23 million improvement project in South San Francisco has the potential to bring hundreds of jobs to the area, but has neighboring San Bruno officials concerned about traffic impacts.
The Centrum Properties’ SFO Logistics Center is a redevelopment project that would modernize and upgrade the 26-acre site located off San Mateo Boulevard and bounded by Interstate 380 and
Highway 101 — near the dividing line between South City and San Bruno.
The project is expected to create 1,070 permanent jobs, including 750 newly created jobs, and 224 construction jobs. It will also increase car and truck traffic, according to the project’s environmental impact report.
“The project is going to impact us,” San Bruno Vice Mayor Jim Ruane said. “We just want to make sure mitigation [of traffic] is handled property.”
A spokesman for Centrum Properties, Jeff Barnett with Singer Associates said the developer is meeting with San Bruno’s elected officials in an effort to address
“We’re attempting to find a compromise to find a solution that would reduce impacts on San Bruno streets,” he said.
The $23 million project would add up to five new one-story buildings for a total of 52,000 square feet of office space on the 623,948 square foot industrial facility site.
The project will also provide trailer and truck storage, new landscaping, new loading and dock areas and a new 544-space parking lot, according to South San Francisco city documents.
SFO Logistics would lease the buildings to high-tech and industrial companies, according to Barnett.
The South San Francisco Planning
Commission unanimously approved the project last month, but an appeal filed by the City of San Bruno will bring the item before the city council for a public hearing on Oct. 14.
South San Francisco Mayor Karyl Matsumoto said the project would benefit both her city and San Bruno from an economic standpoint.
“It sounds good to clean up an area that’s kind of blighting,” Matsumoto said. “It’s going to bring jobs and revenue to the city of San Bruno more than South San Francisco. It sounds like a good deal.”
