Mayor Gavin Newsom is a few days into his new job — parenting — and he admitted it’s a lot of work. Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, welcomed a baby girl into the world Friday. Since then, the mayor said, sleep has been hard to come by. The question is not how many hours of shut-eye he’s had, but “how many hours in a row,” Newsom said, jokingly, during a City Hall event Monday.

Feds give thumbs up on Laguna Honda

The U.S. Department of Justice visited Laguna Honda Hospital earlier this month to check in on its patients, and it seems as though things are improving. In 1998, the DOJ slammed the hospital in a report that said patients would wander away from hospital grounds for hours, bring drugs or alcohol into the facility and obtain dangerous objects. One patient died after choking on a peanut butter sandwich.

Book sale will benefit city libraries

Starting on Thursday, bookworms will have a chance to pick up some extra reading on the cheap, while also giving back to The City’s public libraries. San Francisco’s 45th annual Big Book Sale will feature over 300,000 books, DVDs, vinyl records and other materials, all going for under $5. All proceeds from the event, which is the largest book sale on the West Coast, will benefit the San Francisco Public Library.

City prepares to buy back Muni substation

The City is on the verge of buying back an old Muni substation on Fillmore Street from the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, which failed in its plans to convert the vacant building into a jazz facility. The redevelopment agency bought the century-old building, which used to house large electricity-generating turbines for streetcars, from The City in 2003 for $900,000.
